You may remember a recent blog, about a certain Well-Dressed Climate Scientist...
Well, we were curious to hear more from her, so after a few friendly e-mails, we asked her how we can "do better" for our earth. And so, she was kind enough to share some of her tips on how we can all live a greener lifestyle and share the global responsibility we have in protecting our environment. Read on!
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

If we could all do 3 simple things on a consistent basis to best reduce our impact on the environment, what would they be?
Just three? 😊
Ok...Here we go!
1. Travel less, and use lower-impact forms of transport.
We've seen with the COVID-19 lockdown that daily greenhouse gas emissions around the world decreased by 17% in early April 2020!
This was in part because we weren't driving and flying. Many large cities around the world have been converting street space so that it can be used for pedestrians and cyclists, and there's a possibility that some of these changes could become permanent.
Imagine, as we move forward, that we continue to walk, bicycle and telecommute more often, rather than spending hours in our single-occupancy, gas-powered vehicles. We'd reduce our dependency on oil, reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, and we'd feel healthier, too.
2. Change our consumption patterns.
By now most of us have heard of "reduce, reuse, recycle," and now we can add "refuse" and "rot" (composting) to those. We have the information out there to become informed consumers, and we can refuse to buy things (plastics and single-use products) that contribute to environmental waste.
Diane, you yourself have posted about how the fashion industry, for example, is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, but you've shown that it doesn't have to be. We can, to the best of our abilities and where possible, make informed choices.
3. Vote for laws and policy makers who put sustainable environmental policies in place.
We have the technology to transform our transportation and energy sectors in Canada, but truly battling climate change will require that we vote for system-wide policies and changes.
Numbers 4, 5, and 6 would be to have difficult conversations with your friends and family so that they are aware; reduce your personal energy consumption; and reduce your reliance on meats and vegetables produced through industrial farming (i.e. buy local!)
Thank you so much for this well-written advice, Dr. Kohfeld! We hope our readers are inspired and encouraged by your words 💚

During these most uncertain times, we have made the decision to move forward with our usual bi-weekly public Studio Shops. Our last one for this month will start tomorrow (Friday, March 20th) from 2-7pm and ends on Saturday (March 21st) from 11-5pm. We’d like to talk about this decision, and assure our guests that our space is a safe environment to shop in.
We appreciate the importance of social distancing at this time and we're very lucky that here at Diane Kennedy, we typically don’t have much close contact. Our Studio Shops are managed by 1-2 of our team and outside of our public Shop
Days, our studio is only available via appointment.
To that end, we have decided to open up for shopping amidst the current COVID-19 situation, because we are a small business. We remain a staple in your wardrobe, because you, our wonderful customers, take the time to support us. Your regular shopping mall retailer will receive hundreds of customers and be manned by over a dozen staff members on any given day. That is a lot of exposure, which is why we understand shutdowns, city-wide. However, for us, much of our business is done online, and only a limited number of guests will visit us, physically. That being said, we want to be able to offer our local customers the opportunity to try on our garments and be fitted professionally, while giving us another avenue to make our items available.
In our province (British Columbia), social gatherings of over 50 people have been canceled until further direction. Thankfully, our studio’s capacity is about 10 people at maximum, and we normally have under 5 guests at a time. This means our studio complies with this current regulation and there is more than enough room to keep your distance from others while shopping.
Of course, we maintain a high level of standards regarding hygiene and have our bathrooms equipped with locally-made hand soaps (by Barefoot Venus) for those wishing to use them.
We politely ask that if you or someone very close is ill, that you stay home and rest. We are always available online and should you have any questions about our garments, we are only a Facebook message or email away (info[at]dianekennedy.ca)!
One more reason why we’d still like to open up shop? Spring is here! New Arrivals have been trickling in. As well as making them available online, we want any locals interested, to be able to try these new items on. Even during periods of seclusion, taking some time for yourself, dressing up for the day and treating yourself well can have a powerful impact on your mood. Positivity and self-care is so important at such a trying time for all.
We hope that you'll join us this weekend ♡
With 2019 nearing its end, the team here at Diane Kennedy wanted to send a most heartfelt thank you for your support. It has been another amazing year for Diane Kennedy; we are so proud of our continued commitment to local and ethical manufacturing, in a fast-fashion world.
We know none of the success we share with you would be possible without *you*, and to be completely honest, it wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable without you, either. So, once more, we thank you for being on this wonderful journey with us.
Wishing you the happiest of holidays, the merriest of Christmases and nothing but the very best for the New Year and beyond.
With Love from Diane, Julia, Logan, and Tracy.
