In addition to modeling for us, Scarlett has been working part-time in our office this summer. With a background in makeup artistry, she has been sharing some of her beauty advice during our office chats. Read on for some expert tips from Scarlett.

It is always fun to share fashion finds, vacation locations and beauty tips with friends. Many of us are now connected to family and friends from near and far on social media, making it easier than ever to share and find things within our online communities. However, sometimes those in-person conversations with girlfriends reveal the best tips!

As we shared on the blog a few weeks ago, during our photo session with Leah Tuttle, we learned about some her favourite and fabulous beauty products. This has sparked a lot of conversation around the office about makeup and beauty rituals. We thought it might be fun to share - since I have learned some new things too!

    Skin and Foundations

While everyone has different skin needs, it is more recently that we have been hearing mainstream cosmetic companies become more transparent about their ingredients. Ativo Skincare is a Vancouver-based brand that manufactures all-natural skincare using only holistic organic ingredients. I swear by their Waterless Beauty Balm, which I use as a makeup remover/moisturizer. It is described on their website as a multi-purpose cream. It's nice to find something that is local and also cruelty-free!

For a lightweight moisturizing foundation, a BB Cream is often a great alternative. A BB cream is actually a 'Beauty Balm'. The difference between that and a tinted moisturizer is that a BB Cream will prime and moisturize your skin at the same time. It provides a bit more coverage than a tinted moisturizer. There are plenty of organic and cruelty-free options at your local retailers and online beauty sites.

    Eyes and Lashes

One thing I have found about wearing eyeshadow as I have gotten older is that it tends to get creasy and wear off during the day. Did you know that an eyeshadow primer is a great solution? There are a few different brands on the market. Eyeshadow primer is used before you apply your eyeshadow so your shadow will stay put all day. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion is a really good one, and it now comes tinted so you can wear it alone instead of eyeshadow if you like. Brilliant!

Our models for Diane Kennedy and Cherry Velvet often come to photoshoots wearing false eyelashes. These are removable and good for one-day wear, but if your lashes have gotten finer or more sparse, I have learned about some other options that are available too. Latisse is a lash growth serum, available by prescription in Canada, and boasts fabulous results for eyelash growth. Eyelash extensions are also an option and are usually done by a certified professional in a medical-spa or skin care clinic.

I hope you have learned a few new things! I know I have! What other beauty or fashion finds would you be interested to learn about?

Look Good, Feel Good Beauty Tips

As we have mentioned before, we have been lucky enough to have Leah Tuttle representing the Diane Kennedy and Cherry Velvet brands since their inception. Leah and her commitment to our brands, as well as her hard work and feedback, have been an integral part of the success of our company.

One of Leah's many talents is her eye for fashion and also beauty. During our recent photoshoot with Leah acting as our model, we couldn't help but delight at the gorgeous makeup and beauty look that she put together for the session. I even quizzed Leah on her lipstick colour and then went right out and purchased it myself! (It was Marc Jacobs le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon in Plum N Get it).

    Leah Beauty Tips Blog

We asked Leah if she would share some of her favourite beauty tips so that we could all benefit from her expertise. After all, it's always fun when someone else recommends something, isn't it?

Makeup Starts with A Good Base

Leah's beauty routine includes an anti-aging serum, skin polish and moisturiser she's created for her own new line of products called Wildcraft Organics. (coming soon to WildcraftOrganics.ca ) Leah has beautiful skin, but as a base she uses Makeup Forever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation added with a Beauty Blender sponge. Next she applies a loose powder over her skin using a big fluffy brush to keep it light and airy. Before applying any eyeshadow she uses an eye primer - like Too Faced Shadow Insurance - and then applies MAC eyeshadows in Sketch and Cranberry using an eyeshadow brush. Eyeliner is Lancome Liner Plume in Noir. Eyebrows are next, and are lightly filled in with an Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade.

    It's All About the Lips!

I have always loved a good lip colour, and no matter the season, I find a pretty berry lip colour or a red lipstick can make you go from drab to fab. Leah was wearing the Marc Jacobs Liquid Lip Crayon on the day of our photoshoot, but also recommends MAC Spice it Up and Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lovesick as some of her favourites.

Whether you are someone that changes your makeup seasonally or just want to add a little something new to your makeup routine, these are fun beauty tips that could be easily incorporated into your existing look.

Thanks Leah for your recommendations! As usual, you look fabulous (and we love your Teal nail polish too!)

  • Size Means Nothing, Fit Means Everything

Published Apr 18 2019 in body positive, body shape, confidence, Everywoman, Made in Canada, Proper fit, Size, Size vs Fit, Unique

Let's talk about the difference between size and fit

It's time to realize that women, all of us, come in unique shapes and fit different sizes. We are all different and that's a good thing. Clothing companies are often criticized for not showing "real women" modeling their clothing. Understandably we would all love to be able to see clothing we are interested in on a body exactly like ours. Wouldn't that make things so easy?? Take a look at the women around you right now. Every single one of them is a different size, shape, height, and proportion. It's truly impossible to show every body type without creating an entire encyclopedia of women's bodies and show how a garment fits on every single one. Let's move on, shall we?

    The Woman In The Mirror

Society needs no help when it comes to damaging women's self-esteem regarding body image. There's a lot we can do to change this! Meet the woman in the mirror with a smile. Tell her she looks beautiful, adorable, cute, sexy, and amazing! At the end of the day when it's just you and the mirror, a choice is made about the words used to describe ourselves, to ourselves. Cut yourself some slack and give some words of encouragement and love to that amazing creature looking back at you. It's time to think about your clothing size as you think about your shoe size. It's just a number that corresponds to the length of your feet. Why not?

      All About The Fit

When you put on your clothes and they fit right, you know it. It's not just about having it go over your body or being able to do up a zipper or a button. It's about pants and sleeves that are the correct length. It's about armholes that don't gap and the way a garment flows over your body. It's about finding the right width of the pant leg that really fits and flatters your body and makes your legs look amazing! When your clothes fit properly you look and feel like you can take on the world. Most of all it's not about waiting until you're the size you want to be, it's about looking and feeling your best Right Now! Give yourself that gift!

    Warm Regards,

    Barb
