`If you came over to my place to hang out during the fall I would offer you a warm cup of homemade Chai Tea. We would sit by the fireplace, listen to the rain pouring outside, catch up and nibble on banana bread too.
I made this tea for us at work and Diane loved it. While the tea brews the entire space smells heavenly with the spices in the air. This stimulating tea is great to awaken your system. I want to share the recipe with you here so you can enjoy it with a friend.
The bonus is these ingredients boost your immune system; are high in antioxidants, great for digestion, supportive of your metabolism, and are anti-inflammatory as well as delicious.
Leah's Spicy Chai Tea Recipe:
Makes 4 litres
1 large fresh Ginger Root (sliced thinly)
1 Tbsp Black Peppercorns
1 Tbsp Cloves Whole
1 Tbsp Cardamom Seeds
3 Cinnamon Sticks
1 Tbsp of Black Tea or 4 tea bags
4 litres or 1 Gallon of cold, fresh water
Bring water to a boil and add each ingredient with exception of the black tea.
Once boiling, reduce to simmer for 45 minutes.
Lastly, add the black tea bags to brew for 3 minutes or longer if you like strong tea.
Strain the entire mixture through a mesh strainer.
Sweeten to taste with honey and add your choice of milk as desired.
Once cooled you can store in the fridge and heat up as needed.
The spicy fragrance of exotic spices is uplifting, soothing and calming. I hope you enjoy the warming kick.
Diane Kennedy customers will recognize Leah Tuttle from our website and social media – she certainly features prominently. What you may not know is that Leah is our sales agent and has been for nearly 12 years. She knows the DK brand inside and out, so she was the perfect choice to join the team as our new Marketing Manager. We wanted to give you a closer look at this beautiful, accomplished woman, and tell you about the origins of her endless enthusiasm for this industry.
A passion for fashion set the course for Leah’s career. She’s worked with designers, artists, retailers, and wholesalers, as a buyer, as a stylist, and as a personal dresser. Every day, she finds new delight in seeing the clothes she gets to work with.
Leah is a multitalented woman. Sales and marketing are her forte, but she's also a chef, and cultivates organic botanicals for her own skincare line; www.wildcraftorganics.ca.
Leah grows her own herbal teas which we are currently enjoying here at the office. "Tranquility Tea" is how we stay balanced and calm throughout the day. The main ingredients are lemon balm, heirloom peppermint, chamomile, lemongrass, calendula and the legendary soothing blossoms of restorative French lavender.
Now that Leah has joined the Diane Kennedy team, she’s been discovering more and more similarities with Diane, our designer. Aside from red hair and green eyes, and their passion for fashion and cosmetics, both ladies have a love of organic gardening.
Diane and Leah have similar tastes in movies and books, and appropriately enough for the Halloween season, they’re both currently reading The Witching Hour trilogy; horror classics by Anne Rice. Around the office, you’ll often hear one or the other exclaiming to each other, “Oh, yeah – me, too!" With this much in common, it’s clear that theirs is a friendship for the ages, 12 years and counting.
This is our favourite season with so many fashion possibilities. We thought you would you like to see what's coming next from the Diane Kennedy design studio. We are thrilled about the new prints and textures of fall.
Capes are back in a big way. Diane has created the perfect topper of the season in 5 juicy colours to fit every mood and whim.
This light, soft, plush wool blend is perfect for the early morning chill with plenty of freedom of movement while walking the dog and running errands.
Last year's capes flew out of stock so fast that Diane has brought you more colour choices and designed an updated version called the A Cappella Cape that you can pre-order now.
As you may have noticed, this season's collection is arriving a little differently than prior collections. Fabrics were delayed and harder to source than ever before. Our fabric supply was affected by Covid delays and this means your fall wardrobe is arriving a little later than usual. We appreciate your patience as you will agree the results will be worth the wait.
Diane was feeling so creative this season that she's designed a jazzed up version of the classic cotton blouse that will be ready soon in 4 exclusive designer prints. Here's a peek at the blouse fabrics:
Another highly anticipated fall item is the new Coat Dress. This versatile piece boasts 3 looks-in-one item! Get a glimpse of a few of the beautiful fabrics here:
In other news, we're thrilled to have a new staff member, Leah Tuttle. You might recognize her as she has done some modelling for us. Here she's wearing the new Coat dress as a longer jacket.
Leah has also been our sales agent for Western Canada for almost 12 years and as such knows our brand inside and out! Stay tuned next week to learn more about Leah!
Take Care, Be Kind and Stay Safe
The first time I ever set eyes on Shelly was in a photo posted on Facebook by a local plus size store. Shelly was a popular shopper there and I have a memory of staring a very long time at her picture and reading the comments posted about her and the dress (of my design) she was wearing. For whatever reason, I felt something unusual when I looked at the photo....not sure quite how to explain it. I'd like to share this story of my girlfriend Shelly and our enduring friendship.
Months later I was having a shopping day in my studio and in walked Shelly. I recognized her right away. Not so much from the picture, but as someone familiar. She said "I didn't know you were that Diane Kennedy" (of her favourite Serene pants) Since that moment, we've become fast friends.
How do you explain meeting someone for the first time but feeling like you've known them forever? It turned out that Shelly lived only about 6 blocks from me and soon she invited me over to her charming apartment. It's like deja vu being there because everything in her apartment, the colours, the objects, and the furniture all felt like I could have picked them out myself. Even the artwork on the walls and her jewelry had a weird feeling of association. Then we discovered that Shelly and I are only one day apart in age...both Virgos and both turning 50 that year.
Shelly really believes strongly in the power of women. It's her mantra. I've met so many wonderful new friends through Shelly. She's great at bringing people together. Shelly has been a Fluevogs collector for years and introduced me to the manager of the downtown store. (you may notice that Fluevogs are worn in many of our photoshoots) She loves to show off her amazing collection of shoes, here with the shorter version of her favourite Serene pant; The Casting Capri.
Shelly is also very involved in our local community and works tirelessly to help promote local events. She was hugely involved in New West Pride for many years. She's worked on many large projects including one to improve our local hospital. Wherever we go together in the city Shelly runs into someone she knows; in fact, she's so well known around the city, she is affectionately named "The Queen of New West".
I just want to say a heartfelt "thank-you" to Shelly for being such an amazing person and friend and for all the love and support she's brought to me and my business. It's so important to nurture and sustain friendships with women as we grow older.
With Shelly in my bubble, this year we'll celebrate our 55th birthday the same way we did on our 50th together. At midnight (right between our birthdays) we'll cram 55 candles on a birthday cake and light it on fire! 'Cause we're two very hot chicks!
Modelling for Diane Kennedy off and on for about 10 years, Scarlett is always a pleasure to work with and brings a fresh, professional look to the clothes. She really knows how to show our clothing in the best light, while still being fun and relatable.
We had a chance to ask her a few questions recently and gather her thoughts about being a model and working with a brand like us.
What do you do when you're not being a supermodel?
My number one job is being the CEO of my household! I am definitely the "momager" in my family, but I also work part-time doing social media managing and some other small creative ventures. My education is in Interior Design and Fine Arts; however, I stopped working full-time when my kids got to school age. Soon it may be time to go back to full-time work as my youngest graduates high school next year.
How did you become a model for Diane Kennedy?
I had modelled in my teens and early twenties (see the darling 80’s photos below!) and then joined an agency again around 10 years ago. Through that agency, I met Diane. Since then, we have worked together on and off, and I have definitely grown and become more comfortable modelling again through her direction and mentorship. I have also worked in makeup for several years, and have ended up doing some modelling through that, also.
Once the photos started being published, can you describe how it felt to see your photos on social media and our website?
Like many women, my body has changed a lot over my twenties and thirties. Now that I am nearing fifty, sometimes it’s a struggle to embrace all of the things that age brings. I am confident working with Logan as a photographer, and his kind and gentle manner puts me at ease. Seeing the DK photos after a shoot always makes me realize that I should be happy being the best I am, at the age I am at, rather than wishing I was where I used to be. Diane knows how to cut clothes that flatter a woman’s body, and so instead of seeing flaws, I see a beautiful woman in the photos.
Would you say modelling in your late 40's has been a positive experience?
Getting back into modelling a little bit later in life was a little daunting – even 10 years ago we weren’t seeing so many older models in mainstream media. So at first, I was self-conscious about my age and probably my weight too, even though I am sure I had nothing to worry about. For the past several years, I have had some personal struggles that really sent me into a dark place. Getting back to work for Diane was truly the start of beginning to feel like myself again. It has been a confidence and self-esteem builder and I am always grateful for the opportunity. The smiles you see in her photos are genuine!
Many thanks to Scarlett, for keeping it real and teaching us a little bit more about herself. It's been such a pleasure to re-connect and work with her again. She's such an inspiration to us!
