Hatley Castle: A Romantic Edwardian Estate
Just outside of Victoria, British Columbia, perched on a hill with a picturesque view of the ocean, lies an enchanting castle that rivals the grand manor houses of England. This historic gem is a must-see for anyone visiting the area.
Designed by Victorian architect Samuel Maclure, this captivating structure was completed in 1908.It's a popular destination for fairytale weddings. You might also recognize it as the set for an impressive list of feature shows and movies including X-Men, Deadpool, Smallville, and MacGyver.
During a recent romantic getaway, Diane and her partner Stephen seized the opportunity to explore the castle just before it was due to be featured in another movie. The timing couldn't have been more perfect!
The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming wisteria, and elegant peacocks were prancing around proudly, adding to the magical ambiance.
While the castle itself was stunning, the surrounding gardens were even more so. There is an Italian garden, a summer perennial border, and further beyond an exquisite Japanese garden.
A myriad of momiji (Japanese Maples), colourful rhododendrons, and candelabra primroses were all in full bloom.
Many of the formal structural elements and the trees in the Japanese Garden date from its creation in 1910. The garden also includes elements common to Japanese gardens including this exquisite azumaya (gazebo) over looking the lake.
According to Japanese design theory, evil spirits can only go in straight lines, hence the twisting paths and a humped bridge.
If you're ever on Vancouver island near Victoria, I recommend a visit!
