Do you love your tummy?
Chances are you have mixed feelings about this particular body part. A lot of people carry their weight in the tummy area, that's just a fact. And while we aren't going to tell you to break out the crop top and show the world how much you love your belly, we do have some great pieces that will make you look amazing and feel confident that your tummy isn't the first thing you notice when you look in the mirror. Bring on the Tunic!
What makes a tunic so special?
Our tunics are designed to accentuate the curves you love and skim and flow over your tummy area. Our Bamboo fabric is unbelievably soft. It has a silky, smooth feel and luxurious drape that glides over your body. An extra bit of "swing" is factored into the stomach area to create an easy flowing silhouette and added comfort. This additional care is taken in the design of all our tops, not just tunics but jackets and vests, too. And yes, they are all designed to be layered and work together.
Invest in a Vest?
Our Recharge Vest is a perfect example of a well thought out design that makes layering so easy. This vest pairs perfectly with tunics and tops of all sleeve lengths. A one button design and a box pleat in the back make for an easy fit and a flattering drape in the midsection. Why not try a vest? It adds so much interest and fun weather worn over a tunic, a tee shirt, or a blouse.
Love It All!
We want to be able to love all of our body parts, even the ones that we are taught to hate. This is one of the steps to living a proud, confident, self-loving life. When we wear clothing that fits just right, accentuate the areas we choose and flatter the areas that challenge us it becomes just a little easier to see the whole picture and be our best selves.
Be kind to yourself!
If there's one thing that Diane Kennedy customers love about our garments, it's how effortless they are. Effortless to wear and care for, that is! Our signature bamboo fabrics are not only incredibly soft and comfortable, but they are also just as easy breezy to maintain.
Washing / Drying
We recommend machine washing our bamboo garments in cold water using a mild eco-friendly soap. After washing, we suggest laying flat or hanging to dry. It's ok to put them in the dryer for a few minutes to get some of the moisture out, but please hang them up right away afterward. If you think about where the lint from your dryer comes from (your clothes) you'll understand that the dryer contributes to your clothes wearing out much faster. Plus the heat from the dryer deteriorates the lycra /spandex in your garments as well.
Our bamboo fabric can hold quite a bit of moisture due to its unique cellular properties. It's ok to hang tops and 'shorter items', but longer items like pants might need to be laid flat to dry to ensure no stretching occurs. For longer tunics and bottoms, draping over a rack best preserves the shape of our garments.
Recently we got this message from one of our customers about a stained garment:
"I am writing because I have a small problem. I just had a call from my dry cleaner regarding a beautiful garment that I bought at your shop. You may remember I bought the gorgeous purple tunic/top (v-neck). Anyway, I was wearing it at a dinner party a couple of days ago and the host passed me a platter with roasted chicken thighs and unfortunately, it was a very shallow platter with way too much chicken juice and fat??? and it spilled down the front of my outfit.
The dry cleaner says they want permission (from me) to dry clean it but are warning me that it may ruin the garment (the tag cleaning instructions say washing) and there is nothing on the tag that says you can dry-clean it."
We wanted to answer this question here so that you can benefit from our answer:
"For a big greasy mess please blot as much of the grease out with paper towels as you can. For greasy/oily stains on the Bamboo we recommend "Shout", it can be found at any grocery store. It does need a good soaking (all over the stain) and some time for the enzymes to work (maybe 20 minutes) before washing. Hang to dry. If some of the stain still remains, repeat again as necessary.
We don't recommend dry cleaning for any of our garments"
Packing for Travel
You may already know that our garments travel exceptionally well. Our pieces fold so nicely & efficiently that it makes packing very easy; whether you're getting ready to take Diane Kennedy on a trip, or just switching over your closet's seasons. To minimize wrinkles, lay your garment flat, folding in the sleeves and hem (vertically, from top to bottom) into a rectangle, then simply roll up your garments starting from the neck. When you get to your destination, shake them out and hang them up, no ironing needed! Any wrinkles will fall out shortly.
In this blog, our own Barb Wilkins shares the story of how she found our newest Diane Kennedy model.
Gia Holman has been teaching lyrical jazz and contemporary dance, from beginner to professional levels, for nearly forty-five years. These days, she focuses on providing classes for other "mature” dancers who are committed to continuing their training and celebrating their creative spirits for as long as possible.
When I first met Gia, she spoke to me like she knew me. I thought maybe I had forgotten our first meeting, but she was so charming and lovely and I went with it! The next time I saw Gia, she confessed that she thought I was someone else she knew. Basically, we were friends from the start.
By virtue of having similar taste in music, we started running into each other often. I found out that Gia had been a professional dancer and dance teacher her whole life. I was transfixed when she posted photos of herself as a young 20-something, just on the verge of heading to New York to study dance. I then found out Gia is still dancing and teaching adults in the semi-retired phase of her life, which was completely inspiring.
Cut to a work meeting discussing the new Diane Kennedy collection: we spoke about wanting to see the clothes worn by a confident, mature woman who could really move. Gia came to mind right away. I contacted her and asked her if she was interested, and she was excited to try modelling for the first time. The date was set.
Gia admitted to being shy, especially around cameras. I chose some music by a mutual friend of ours, and once the blues started streaming out of the stereo and the camera started clicking, Gia transformed.
She didn’t seem shy at all!
I found it fascinating to see Gia move. It was thrilling to see how well she knew her own body – how it moved and created shapes and lines.
"Lyrical dance is about line, form, and flow of movement –
I find all three elements in Diane's designs.
They are a delight to wear."
~ Gia Holman

Despite frost and low temperatures, spring is just around the corner – honest! Every new season brings fresh perspectives, and designers assemble their tools to create trends. One of my most useful tools is a storyboard – it helps me plan a season in terms of styles, colours, and prints. Here’s a glimpse at the first half of our Spring 2019 collection for our beautiful range of regular and plus size customers.
The Terrific Tunics
Our City Tunic is an exciting new cut with striking graphic details.
Returning favourites like the Illustrate Tunic feature a sophisticated take on tie dye, and the Evidence Tunic is both whimsical and classic with a juxtaposition of polka dots and stripes.
The Jazzy Jacket
Smart stripes make our Paradox jacket extra-sharp, without sacrificing the softness and comfort that are Diane Kennedy trademarks. Especially when paired with our flowing, dramatic Pacific Pant, this piece creates a striking silhouette.
The Versatile Vest
Our Recharge Vest continues to show its versatility as part of the Spring 2019 collection. Add it to one of our Perfect Tops for effortless style. And yes, it has pockets!
The Jaunty Jumpsuits
Nothing beats a one-piece when it comes to comfort and ease. Our new Jinx Jumpsuit comes in a brilliant Moroccan blue or solid black and the Screen Playsuit returns in both stripes and a solid black.
What I anticipate most about a new season is seeing how our customers take these pieces and make them their own. Let me know which piece you’re most excited to add to your wardrobe!
Autumn is so glorious this year, it's a joy to be outside and photographing fall outfits against this stunning backdrop. One reason for this shoot is to introduce you to our new social media manager Kim Palmer. The other is to show you some photos of our newest arrivals.
We spent the day at one of our favorite Vancouver parks called Momiji on the PNE grounds in Vancouver. It's a hidden gem, tiny but peaceful and full of Japanese Maple trees in every shade of gold, green and red. They look beautiful all year but especially after this uncharacteristically hot summer. The leaves are on fire!!
Back after a long absence is the perennial favourite Recharge Vest. Kim is wearing it over the Illusion Tunic in Moroccan blue and matching Rejuvenate leggings. If you're short, dressing head to toe in one colour is a great way to visually lengthen yourself. Kim is tall at 5'9" and even commented that because she's tall she prefers to break up her height with different blocks of colour.
Kim looks smashing in our new Persuasion Zip Jacket. This lovely, heavier weight fleece topper has a soft brushed finish of cozy fleece on the inside making it super soft and comfy.
The Alchemy Tunic is an asymmetrical beauty that looks great over pants or leggings. Available in two colours; Black and Purple in the softest and most luxurious medium weight sweater knit.
The new Tempt Tunic is another recent arrival in a gorgeous Heather Forest colour. With two roomy pockets for all your treasures, it's a winner and the perfect match for the Smarty pant in Black/ Forest stripe.
We think Kim looks fantastic in these outfits, you'll be seeing more of her. We're very excited to have Kim join our team!
