  • As The Survey Turns...

Published Feb 07 2020 in customer service, diane kennedy, fashion industry, inspiration, survey, tunics

Thank you to everyone who completed the survey; we greatly appreciate your feedback. Although my Spring 2020 collection is currently in production, I'll do my best to include your ideas for future seasons. In fact, I'm working on the Fall 2020 season right now and hope to include some of your suggestions as I design.

As for the survey, I'd like to touch on some of the more popular results as they stand, since I found them to be quite interesting. Perhaps you will, too!

    Pants On Fire

There were many requests for a slim pant with pockets. You read my mind! This Spring, I will be releasing our Ignite Pant, which is exactly that; a slimmer fit with flat-to-the body pockets.

    Petite Proposals

As a petite person myself, I understand the demand for shorter tops and pants. I am glad to see that there were many comments for such pieces. While we do have a few bottoms available in petite sizing, I will definitely consider making more garments that can be worn by petites like shorter tops.

    Colourful Comments

While I received requests for more colours in the warmer range (such as browns), we require a certain amount of demand, in order for us to order new colours from our Canadian Mills. We need to order 300 meters for each colour and as a small company it can be difficult to make use of that much yardage in colours that traditionally do not sell as well as the cooler tones. However I'm still choosing colours and putting the fall colour and fabric selection together. There is a potential for a wider assortment of colours in other fabrics like wool or cotton as well. I'll do my best!

    Crew on Deck...I mean neck.

We're releasing a new piece for Spring, called the "Tranquil Tunic". We hope that this pleases those who asked for more crew neck tops!

We've also heard that more variation in collars and necklines would be nice and I think so, too. Thankfully, you'll be seeing a few of those in our upcoming collection, and I hope they'll be enjoyed as much as I enjoyed designing them. I'll continue to think creatively, as I design for Fall.

    Skirting Around

I haven't thought about it for years, but it seems like you have! I have some great ideas for skirts and am very happy to be designing one for the upcoming Fall season.

    Thank you!

I loved reading every one of your comments and it helps me design pieces that you'll love, so I'm very grateful for your input.

If you haven't had a chance yet, please feel free to take our survey. As thanks for taking the time, you'll receive a 20% discount code upon completing it :)

  • Caught in Cotton

Published Jan 24 2020 in 100% cotton, cotton, fashion, Made in Canada, over 50, slow fashion, tunics

If you've been following us on social media, you may have seen some little teasers of a new fabric that we're bringing out this Spring 2020. We're happy to introduce woven 100% cotton to our collection! You may know we've been making dresses using this same fabric for our other clothing brand, Cherry Velvet dresses for many years. To that end, we can confidently attest to the quality and wearability of this wonderful fabric.

100% Cotton prints for Diane Kennedy Spring 2020 collection

Several customers had asked about Diane Kennedy items using cotton prints. It was such a good idea, we made it happen!

We'll always continue to use our signature bamboo fabric. We know many of you love it for its exceptional softness and ease of wear. That being said, this cotton brings to the table something that we've never been able to find in bamboo; a wide range of beautiful, stylish prints. Our Spring 2020 collection was designed around some lovely, artistic brush stroke prints mimicking the surface of water.

    Cotton Care:

Crisp, cool and comfortable - our new cotton fabric is very similar to care for as our Bamboo. Wash it like any other garment in the washing machine and hang to dry. When you hang it spend a minute smoothing out the wrinkles by hand or iron with a cotton setting if you prefer.

    Where to wear!

This cotton fabric travels very well. We recommend folding your cotton pieces on the very top of your suitcase, right before you're going to zip it up. Hang them when you get to your destination and they'll be ready for wear, where ever you are.

Later this season, the Sightsee shirt will be released. It can be worn as a jacket, shirt or even a beach cover up, making it the perfect travel garment. In fact, Diane is planning on bringing it with her on a well-deserved sailing trip to Greece later this year!

Each photoshoot that we do for Diane Kennedy takes some time and planning ahead. Since we are doing more frequent, smaller fashion releases, we have been doing photoshoots more often. We love featuring photos of our clothes outdoors to take advantage of natural light and the beautiful greenery in Vancouver! The beautiful Momiji Gardens at Hastings Park is a Japanese style garden and a little hidden gem along East Hastings Street. It is close to our office (bonus!) and always fairly quiet.

Soft Shirt, Diane Kennedy, Tunics, Made in Canada

For part of our Fall collection, Diane has brought back the Soft Shirt, this time in Steel grey. It looks great paired with a pair of pants for the office, or jeans for a weekend or more casual look. We have it paired with our popular Flex Pants, and with our new striped Gallery Vest, which is a new piece for Fall 2019. Scarlett is also sporting a favourite pair of fabulous Fluevogs - the Zenobia which is a slingback wedge heel. The Gallery Vest is a piece that is very versatile - it could be worn over our Perfect Top, and yet still light enough to go under a coat.

behind the scenes, diane kennedy, vancouver,

We have a system down when it comes to transporting our clothing and accessories to various outdoor locations for our fashion photoshoots. This handy vintage train case is from Diane's personal collection, and has been toted around the Lower Mainland a lot! Of course, we love our Fluevog shoes and tend to use them often when styling Diane Kennedy clothing.

City Tunic, Diane Kennedy, Fashion, Made in Canada

The City Tunic in steel with black stripes is another new colour way for Fall. It is an easy-to-wear design, has a flattering crew-neck, 3/4 sleeves and of course, a pocket! In this photo we paired it with the Balance Pant and the necklace is by Bellalili (bracelets are Scarlett's own). The weather was really warm, but we found some great shady spots for photos.

Makeup touchups, especially when shooting Fall clothing in the heat of summer are inevitable! Scarlett brought her own lip colours but was enamoured with Diane's new MAC lipstick in You're So Vain (it's fabulous!). Logan, our in-house photographer, is always a pro at scouting great spots to photograph in-between set-ups and changes, so we are often complete in record time.

  • Let's Make Outfits; Barb's Style

We love and appreciate our customers and are always trying to find ways to make your shopping experience better. Sometimes when you see a bunch of clothes online you wonder, how should I wear that?  You want to get ideas to style your own outfits, right? We figured, let's look at the collection as a whole and put together some outfits to show you.

That's where I got recruited. I'm not a model. Full stop. I work for Diane Kennedy clothing in the capacity of customer service, I also do all the shipping and write the odd blog post, among other things. But the other day I was challenged with putting together some outfits from our Spring 2019 collection that I would wear in my own way.

Vancouver Designer Diane Kennedy's Bamboo separates

The City Tunic and Casting Capri in gorgeous Moroccan. Could an outfit be any easier to wear?

Vancouver Designer Diane Kennedy's Bamboo separates I want to say right from the beginning that modeling is hard. I'm not kidding, it's a lot harder than it looks. Lucky for me, I had our newest team member Tracy and our in-house fab photographer Logan to put me through the moves. Tracy knows all about how to get the best out of a model, how to stand, how to walk, what to do with your hands, where to look. It's actually a lot to think about so I was so, so grateful for the guidance. Logan is fantastic, among other things, and he is infinitely talented and extremely patient.

I couldn't wait to try the new Jinx Jumpsuit on. Possibly the most comfortable thing I've ever worn. I wanted to try the Black and White striped Paradox Jacket over top and I just loved this look! This jumpsuit is so casual and yet so easily dressed up.

Another new fave has got to be the fantastically versatile top Add Pockets in Moroccan. Wear it on its own or layer it over almost anything to create the most amazing silhouette. I wore it over the Rejuvenate Leggings also in Moroccan and topped that with the Paradox Jacket in Black and Moroccan stripe. I love the way these layer up and the jacket just pulls the whole look together.

Here I've worn  Add Pockets with the Casting Capri in Black and Moroccan stripe. These capris are so fun with their wider leg and are the perfect length. Wear them with flats or a little bit of a heel. Again, casual or dressy but always soft and luxurious.

This is just me, wearing a few of my favourite Diane Kennedy separates. I hope you enjoy seeing my personal choices of Diane Kennedy's Spring 2019 line and that you can envision our collection as part of your own personal style.

  • How to "Add Pockets" to your Wardrobe

Published May 17 2019 in bamboo, bare arms, body positive, design, ethical, fashion, local, Made in Canada, pockets, tunics, vests

Everyone loves Pockets, right? I'm in a lucky position as a designer to be able to create exactly the item that I want to wear. For Spring this year I thought to myself what are all the things that I want in a new top? The Add Pockets Tunic was what I came up with.

Jennifer Pistor wears a Diane Kennedy outfit of the Add Pockets Tunic and Smarty Pants

The idea behind "Add Pockets" was a top that could be worn in different ways. For me, that means mostly on its own but it can also be worn like a vest over a sleeved top like the Perfect Tee. In this way, it transcends the seasons and "Add Pockets" can be worn all year long. It's a summer top but it's also perfect for fall layering when worn as a vest. It's shown here as an outfit with the Smarty Pants.

So if like me you LOVE bare arms in the summer, this could be for you. Many women complain about their arms, specifically that 'extra area' under the bicep. I choose not to be one of them. I'm kind of indifferent to my arms, bare arms are so freeing and comfortable for my busy workday.

Scarlet wears a Diane Kennedy outfit of the Add Pockets Tunic and Travel Pants

Other than deep pockets for my phone, the Add Pockets tunic was designed to be flattering with lots of room across the tummy, and slimming vertical seams. It's long enough so that it can be worn with Cafe leggings too.
