  • The BEST pants you'll ever wear

Published Oct 23 2020 in #style over 50, best plus size pants, eco, Made in Canada

It's Leah writing the blog this week, and I want to share with you why Diane's pants are the best pants you'll ever wear.

Did you know that Diane Kennedy's pants are the most reordered item we sell? Ladies buy two at a time and stores consistently restock the pants because their customers can't get enough. Recently Diane re-imagined her best selling Flex pant into a new version that includes pockets called the Spirit Pant, available in Regular, Plus and Petite sizes. Honestly, they fly off the shelves and it made me want to share a story with you about the importance of great fitting pants.

Last week, a friend of mine splurged on a new pair of pants for work (not DK) and was complaining about how disappointed she was with the fit. After showing me what she was wearing (name brand label) we had a quick chat about the difference between pants made in Canada by a designer who ensures quality by overseeing production and imported mass manufactured garments. She was feeling ripped off and a little confused and appreciated the feedback so she won't be wasting her money in future.

I explained that the bottom line (pun intended) is what matters to these big labels and that means cutting costs wherever possible. Alternatively, the results are completely different when you buy a garment that has been meticulously tailored, measured and crafted with quality fabrics.

    How does this affect you?

Diane's pants and leggings are made for your comfort. She is designing for curves and knows that our bodies have width, but also depth. If you turn sideways in a mirror you can see the curves that a garment must maneuver. Diane understands these proportions.

Here is an example to show how different the average legging pattern (right) is compared with legging pattern (left) made by Diane. The average pattern is flat and made for a one dimensional result which will not work. Women are not flat.

Diane Kennedy pant fitTo compare; Diane chooses to design with fabrics that are ethically made in Canada. You are wearing healthy, soft, breathable bamboo which moves with you. Waistbands are wide and contoured to always give you a smooth fit with no muffin top. Each garment is locally produced in Canada with love. Our customers claim this bamboo makes their legs feel energized and heavenly.

You want all day comfort with movement, stretch with memory, breathable fabric and quality that lasts. This is why these are the most comfortable leggings and pants you will ever wear: Find your favourite pant or legging on our website now in sizes S-3X and we are sure you'll agree that these are the best pants you'll ever wear.

We look forward to hearing your opinions on the fit, fabric and your experiences.

  • What's Up and Coming

Published Oct 02 2020 in #over50, #style over 50, 100% cotton, ageless style, diane kennedy, Fall 2020, Made in Canada

This is our favourite season with so many fashion possibilities. We thought you would you like to see what's coming next from the Diane Kennedy design studio. We are thrilled about the new prints and textures of fall.

Capes are back in a big way. Diane has created the perfect topper of the season in 5 juicy colours to fit every mood and whim.

This light, soft, plush wool blend is perfect for the early morning chill with plenty of freedom of movement while walking the dog and running errands.

Last year's capes flew out of stock so fast that Diane has brought you more colour choices and designed an updated version called the A Cappella Cape that you can pre-order now.

As you may have noticed, this season's collection is arriving a little differently than prior collections. Fabrics were delayed and harder to source than ever before. Our fabric supply was affected by Covid delays and this means your fall wardrobe is arriving a little later than usual. We appreciate your patience as you will agree the results will be worth the wait.

Diane was feeling so creative this season that she's designed a jazzed up version of the classic cotton blouse that will be ready soon in 4 exclusive designer prints. Here's a peek at the blouse fabrics:

In other news, we're thrilled to have a new staff member, Leah Tuttle. You might recognize her as she has done some modelling for us. Here she's wearing the new Coat dress as a longer jacket.

  • Size vs Fit - What's the Difference?

Published Aug 15 2019 in #style over 40, #style over 50, body confidence, body positive, Garment fit, Size, Size and fit, Size vs Fit, Unique

Let's talk about the difference between size and fit

As we know, women come in unique shapes and fit different sizes. Acknowledging and owning that we are different is a good thing! Clothing companies are often criticized for not showing 'real women' showing their clothing. Understandably, we would all love to be able to see clothing featured on a body that is exactly like our own. Wouldn't that make things so easy? Take a look at the women around you right now. Every single one of them is a different size, shape, height, and proportion. It is truly impossible to show every body type without creating an entire encyclopedia of women's bodies and featuring how a  garment fits on every single one. Let's simply move on, shall we?

Look At The Woman In The Mirror

Society can be damaging to a woman's self-esteem regarding her body image. There's a lot we can do to change this! Meet the woman in the mirror with a smile. Tell her she looks beautiful, adorable, cute, sexy, and amazing! At the end of the day, when it's just you in front of the mirror, you make a choice about the words you choose to describe yourself. Be kind to yourself and give some words of encouragement and love to that amazing creature looking back at you. It's time to think about your clothing size like you think about your shoe size - it is just a number that corresponds to the length of your feet. It doesn't define your self-worth.

    All About The Fit

When you put on your clothes and they fit right, you know it. They feel good. It's not just about going over your body or being able to do up a zipper or a button. It's about pants and sleeves that are the correct length. It's about armholes that don't gap and the way a garment flows over your body. It's about finding the right  pant leg that really fits and flatters your body and makes your legs look amazing! When your clothes fit properly you look and feel like you can take on the world. Most of all it's not about waiting until you're the size you want to be, it's about looking and feeling your best right now! Give yourself that gift!

    Warm Regards,

    Barb

  • Model Spotlight :: Scarlett Ballantyne

Published Jun 21 2019 in #over50, #style over 40, #style over 50, confidence, diane kennedy, inspiration, Made in Canada, Scarlett

Scarlett Ballantyne modeling Diane Kennedy clothingMeet Scarlett

Modelling for Diane Kennedy off and on for about 10 years, Scarlett is always a pleasure to work with and brings a fresh, professional look to the clothes.  She really knows how to show our clothing in the best light, while still being fun and relatable.

We had a chance to ask her a few questions recently and gather her thoughts about being a model and working with a brand like us.

What do you do when you're not being a supermodel?

My number one job is being the CEO of my household! I am definitely the "momager" in my family, but I also work part-time doing social media managing and some other small creative ventures. My education is in Interior Design and Fine Arts; however, I stopped working full-time when my kids got to school age. Soon it may be time to go back to full-time work as my youngest graduates high school next year.

How did you become a model for Diane Kennedy?

I had modelled in my teens and early twenties (see the darling 80’s photos below!) and then joined an agency again around 10 years ago. Through that agency, I met Diane. Since then, we have worked together on and off, and I have definitely grown and become more comfortable modelling again through her direction and mentorship. I have also worked in makeup for several years, and have ended up doing some modelling through that, also.

Once the photos started being published, can you describe how it felt to see your photos on social media and our website?

Like many women, my body has changed a lot over my twenties and thirties. Now that I am nearing fifty, sometimes it’s a struggle to embrace all of the things that age brings. I am confident working with Logan as a photographer, and his kind and gentle manner puts me at ease. Seeing the DK photos after a shoot always makes me realize that I should be happy being the best I am, at the age I am at, rather than wishing I was where I used to be. Diane knows how to cut clothes that flatter a woman’s body, and so instead of seeing flaws, I see a beautiful woman in the photos.

Would you say modelling in your late 40's has been a positive experience?

Getting back into modelling a little bit later in life was a little daunting – even 10 years ago we weren’t seeing so many older models in mainstream media. So at first, I was self-conscious about my age and probably my weight too, even though I am sure I had nothing to worry about. For the past several years, I have had some personal struggles that really sent me into a dark place. Getting back to work for Diane was truly the start of beginning to feel like myself again. It has been a confidence and self-esteem builder and I am always grateful for the opportunity. The smiles you see in her photos are genuine!

Many thanks to Scarlett, for keeping it real and teaching us a little bit more about herself. It's been such a pleasure to re-connect and work with her again. She's such an inspiration to us!

  • What a Great Jacket Can Do For You

Published Jun 14 2019 in #style over 50, bamboo, colour, eco friendly, ethical fashion, jackets, jumpsuit, shop local

Sometimes all it takes is that perfect jacket to take any outfit to the next level. We often choose a jacket as a 'basic' item. But what if we thought of it differently? What if we treated a jacket as an accessory to the outfit?

Barb Wilkins wears outfits by Diane Kennedy; Vancouver designer

Our Jinx Jumpsuit is great on its own - just step in, zip it up and you're dressed. Add The Paradox Jacket with its graphic black and white stripes and you're ready to take this look to the office or out for the evening. This is a great example of using a jacket as an accessory.

Gia is wearing The Jinx Jumpsuit in Moroccan and has paired it with a Black Paradox Jacket. The same two pieces as the photos above but a completely different look. Would you have thought of wearing a 'tailored style' jacket over a jumpsuit?

Barb Wilkins wears outfit designed by Canadian designer Diane Kennedy

A great jacket can completely change the outfit. Here we have the same Casting Capri and Clever Cami base but with two different Jackets. Barb wears the Paradox Jacket on the left and the Downtown Jacket on the right. It changes it completely, doesn't it?

Don't be afraid to mix your stripes! Elevate your style with some contrast. The Casting Capri, Clever Cami, and Paradox Jacket with a great pair of shoes in a contrasting colour (Fluevog here) to really make a statement.

One Jacket with two different styles of pant. This changes the look dramatically. The Downtown Jacket paired with The Pacific Pant a palazzo-style pant is office or dinner appropriate. To make it casual zip it up over a pair of Rejuvenate Leggings. This super versatile jacket can also be worn as a tunic.

There it is. Consider adding an "accent" jacket to your wardrobe. It is just about the best way to elevate your clothing collection.
